Character - Lövholmen
My thesis project is an attempt to find the character of the post-industrial site of Lövholmen and a counter-proposal, based on the found characteristics, to the existing transformation plans for the site. An attempt to look past the industrial romanticism of decay and to find aspects that have shaped the area in over one hundred years of industrial developments. Characteristics that should be acknowledged as an inherent part of Lövholmen and a new development that becomes part of the spatial context that exists, and has existed on the site before.
The complexity of the concept of character and what it entails can be interpreted in different ways. Etymologically, ’character’ is attributed to Greek, χαeακτήe, ‘that which is engraved’. The description contains a sense of time, the time that must pass for something to be engraved. A concept that cannot be attributed to a place but a feeling that is and constitutes a place.
